Confine - Setting Fire To The Western Hemisphere (2013)

Confine are a grindcore supergroup comprising members of the Afternoon Gentlemen, Oblivionized, Corrupt Moral Altar, and Human Cull. While playing the ol' super-fast, short, and rampaging grind, they've got an overall layer of buzzing noise in both vocals and guitars, yet they're far from the noisegrind spectrum. Their sound isn't much bass-driven and it's more of a thrashed out scorch, so it's just as good as a Phobia record for getting a thrash metal fan into grindcore; since it's not all bestial, all muddy, and it's not half-assed either. As an avid TAG fan I played the fuck out of this EP, even though it was less crusty, and less powerviolence-rooted, I enjoyed the different direction they explored on it.

Sludge Metal Massacre Vol. 2 (2012)

As you probably know, I started this compilation series for two ends; first, to get more people into sludge, and second; to introduce people who're already in the scene, to new bands. So, if you're among the second group and notice big names in there, have it in mind that this compilation is also for the people who're not into the genre at all and don't know any of those. In this volume, I've added a couple of doom, hardcore, and crust tastes, too, and it's not strictly sludge, as the line between these genres remains merely an imaginary, theoretical one. Additionally, this is not a best-song/whatever list, cause I don't believe in such crap. An album is an album and should be listened in its entirety. So, again, this ain't no fucking pop chart. Rather, think of it as a playlist -- made of this year's finest sludge, doom, hardcore and crust punk releases.

One Inch Giant - Malva (2011)

From Hendrix's fuzzed-out blues to Pentagram's acid doom, there's the riff that outlasts pretty much anything else. In a musical setting rather similar to the Doménec Pascual Badía-esque artwork of "Malva", One Inch Giant play toothsome stoner rock; vocally somewhere stuck between Trippy Wicked & the Cosmic Children of the Knight and Blitzkrieg, and; musically, Leadfoot, Buckaduzz, and Leaf Hound.

Four Hour Fogger - Dollars For Red Books (1999)

From around 1993 to 1999; while Brann and Bill were playing in Lethargy, the other two mastodudes were busy in Four Hour Fogger -- a band whose music can best be described as O.L.D. meeting Scratch Acid, judging by the tunes on their only release, 1999's "Dollars For Red Books".

Ancestral House Of The Sun - Ancestral House Of The Sun (2010)

I used to be so deeply possessed by the surf rock sound that I almost banned anything that didn't have enough feedback to it. But, like Proust points it out in "Within A Budding Grove", "the character which a man exhibits in the latter half of his life is not always, even if it is often his original character developed or withered, attenuated or enlarged; it is sometimes the exact opposite, like a garment that has been turned", and therefore, in time, I also got into Sandy Bull, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Ralph Stanley, the Angles of Light, John Fahey, and later, Steve Von Till. The self-titled debut from Ancestral House of the Sun, which I'm to present to you today, may not be released by Neurot, but is -- both conceptually and musically -- a record harpooned and carved out of the bleak, and it might as well be a proper instance of the so-called apocalyptic folk subgenre.

Butterslax - Corn Burglar (1995)

One of Bill's first ever bands -- that is before he joined Lethargy -- was Butterslax. Just like Troy's band, Knuckle, there's hardly any info on the band members, but at least the demo they did in 1995, called "Corn Burglar" can be found on the internet. Whoever did the vocals was for one, a capable fella, sounding as sharp and unique as some of the finest vocalists from the 90's, say John Garcia or Layne Staley. Their music, also, stands out just as solid. It incorporates a multitude of styles, from math rock of Big Black to plain fuzz and grunge of early Mudhoney, all played in a fairly no-nonsense fashion of a faster, more hardcore variation of Fugazi's post-punk.

Clagg - Lord Of The Deep (2010)

Clagg's "Lord Of The Deep" is a murky piece of dirt, a sonic glue that'll stick to your ears and roars Satan into them for eternity. It is also subtle, and it concerns black metal to the same extent that it concerns the blues. Sound-wise the record is halfway trapped in the sludge metal territory, and half the other way; southern rock. In other words, Clagg can be seen as haarp's evil twin, who are paying all the debt haarp didn't pay, to the South. Dark, slow-motion riffs and gruesome death growls -- this is the soundtrack to the deep-sea dragons pigging out, on your flesh. Remember John Lee Hooker.

Tona - 1000 (2008)

Instrumentally, just as ambitious as Kong, Fu Manchu, and Keelhaul; and vocally, just as compelling as the Melvins, Five Horse Johnson, and Masters Of Reality; Tona are the sort of band you don't want to miss. And their full-length, "1000", the kind of record you'll be paying a visit at least twice a year, after your first round of listens. Led by former Katarza frontman, Đorđe Skorupan, the band delivers an engaging brand of rock music, combining the breeziness of desert rock with the incomplex complexity of noise rock, all while not trying too hard to sound like a replica of any of their influences -- e.g. Thin White Rope, Motörhead.

Necromandus - Orexis Of Death (1996)

Illustrating evil in a soft, bluesy way, "Orexis Of Death" does indeed remind the listener of the one responsible for its discovery -- Tony Iommi. The band's history, as re-told by the press, mirrors Pentagram's, for they were also a pioneering proto-doom metal act with thousands of internal and external conflicts. The case of Necromandus, however, can be observed as rather ambiguous, in regards to certain points; for instance the sudden break-up of the band, just before they got into a deal with the giant label Vertigo, and right after finishing the recording session with none other than Black Sabbath's Iommi. Nevertheless, their music has pretty much outlasted any odd circumstance, and no matter how short in length, it remains just as important, in the history of doom metal. Bill Branch, gives a top-notch performance as the vocalist, on par with Greg Lake and Michael Winzkowski, and Barry Dunnery, the guitarist, simply nails it. A classic in every sense.
